What is SCIA

SCIA has been realized by APAT in the framework of the national environmental information system, in collaboration with the institutions listed on the home page. Its aim is to establish among all the relevant institutions dealing with meteorological networks and observations, a common procedure for calculating,  updating and representing climatological data useful for the representation of the state of climate and its trend.

The main meteo-climatological variables taken into account are:  temperature, potential temperature, equivalent potential temperature, precipitation, relative humidity,  wind, water balance, bioclimatological index, insolation, potential evapotranspiration, degree-days, fog and visibility, cloudiness, atmospheric pressure, global radiation. For each variable 10-days, monthly and annual indicators are calculated.

The indicators undergo homogeneous validity controls agreed with the owners of the  data from which the indicators are derived.  The methods adopted for the calculation of the indicators and the validity controls are described in the document "Criteri di calcolo degli indicatori meteoclimatici" (in Italian, see Documents).

Through the SCIA web site one can display and download  the main indicators calculated and stored into the system as tables, diagrams, bar charts and maps.
